Pan Am Games Milton Velodrome
Providing a World-Class Stage for Athletic Excellence
In 2015, approximately 7,000 athletes from Latin America, South America, the Caribbean, and North America will visit the Greater Toronto Area to participate in in 36 Pan Am and 15 Parapan Am world-class sports competition. The Pan American Games are the world’s third largest international multi-sport games, only exceeded in size and scope by the Olympic summer games and Asian games.
The Milton Velodrome will be world-class cycling facility designed to be a Category 1 indoor 250-metre timber track in accordance with international requirements. The Velodrome will have 1,500 permanent seats with capacity to expand to host large-scale events.
The facility will include athlete change rooms and amenities, a fitness centre and will be the new home for the Canadian Cycling team and will only be the second facility of this type in North America. Following the Games, the Velodrome infield will also be used for other recreational activities such as basketball and volleyball. In order to accommodate an easy transition of the facility from “games mode” to “legacy mode,” the designers incorporated a high level of flexibility with the overall design, including generators designed to cover additional loads during the games, and offices designed to be converted to media centres. The venue will become an integrated part of the community post Games and will be environmentally sustainable, designed and constructed to achieve a minimum standard of LEED Silver certification.
